Overview

What is Lucifer?

is a "burn-in" program designed to thoroughly check your system for errors.

In depth

A closer look at Lucifer

Burn-in programs put your system under maximum load to help you detect unreliable components. If you are going to buy a new server, or even just any old computer, you might want to use such a program to ensure the computer in question can handle the job. A computer that fails these burn-in tests would likely have failed at a later date. Some people run a burn-in program just before their computer's warranty expires for the same reason.

"Overclockers" (people who push their CPU beyond its designated MHz rating) should use a burn-in program to make sure their machine is stable at the increased clock speed. Lucifer does not test your video card or display pictures, so you may want to use it in conjunction with a video game (such as Quake3 or Unreal).

Lucifer tests for system errors caused by bad memory, overheated CPUs, broken storage devices (hard drive, floppy, or CD-ROM), and more. If your hardware is flaky, Lucifer will find out and let you know.
