In depth

Y2MP4 Overview

Y2MP4 converts a YouTube link into an MP4 video file. Paste the URL, click Convert, then choose your resolution on the download page. There is no account to create and no software to install.

MP4 is the default here for a practical reason: it is the most widely supported video container in existence. Phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, games consoles and editing software all read it without extra codecs. If you are unsure what a file needs to play on, MP4 is the safe answer.

Audio output is available too if you only want the sound - see the section below on choosing between the two.

YouTube Videos to MP4

Paste the YouTube video URL in the box below and click Convert.

  • Copy your YouTube video link and paste it in the input field above
  • Click the Convert button to start
  • Choose MP4 and your preferred resolution on the download page
  • Save the file to your device
Works with standard video links, youtu.be short links, and Shorts URLs.

The video resolutions available are:
1080p (.mp4) full-HD
720p (.mp4) m-HD
360p (.mp4)
240p (.mp4)
144p (.mp4)

Audio Formats: .mp3 .aac .ogg .m4a .wma .flac .wav
Video Formats: .mp4 .m4v .mov .flv .avi .mpg .wmv
By using our online tool you are accepting our terms of use.

Choosing a Resolution

Higher is not automatically better. Resolution interacts with the screen you will watch on, the storage the file has to fit into, and the connection it travels over.

As a rough guide for a five-minute video:
- 1080p - around 150 MB. Right for a laptop, a TV, or anything you intend to keep.
- 720p - around 75 MB. The best all-round compromise for most people.
- 360p - around 30 MB. Sensible when storage or mobile data is limited.
- 240p and 144p - very small, for slow connections where the alternative is nothing at all.

On a phone screen the visible difference between 480p and 1080p is far smaller than the three-fold difference in file size.

One ceiling worth knowing: a converter cannot create detail that is not in the source. If a video was uploaded at 720p, asking for 1080p produces a larger file containing exactly the same picture. Any site advertising 4K on every video is describing its menu, not the source material.

Video or Audio?

MP4 contains both a video and an audio track. MP3 contains only audio. Converting to MP3 works by stripping the video away, which is why the file ends up around a tenth of the size.

Take the MP4 when the picture matters - tutorials where you need to see what is happening, anything visual, or clips you plan to edit.

Take the MP3 when you only intend to listen. Besides the size saving, audio playback lets your phone screen sleep, which uses noticeably less battery on a long journey. For bitrate: 320 kbps for music worth keeping, 192 kbps for general listening, 128 kbps for anything speech-led.

Audio Quality Explained

Audio quality depends on bit rate, sample rate, file format and encoding method. Bit rate is the amount of data used per second of audio, measured in kilobits per second (kbps) - it is the setting that most affects both how the file sounds and how large it is. Sample rate is how many measurements of the sound wave are taken per second, usually 44.1 kHz for music.

In practice, bit rate is the only one of these you need to choose. Going above 320 kbps does not improve anything, because the source audio on YouTube is already compressed - a higher setting simply produces a larger file containing the same sound. Any converter promising lossless audio from a streaming video is overselling what is possible.

Where Your Downloads Go

The most common question after a successful conversion is simply where the file ended up.

Android - almost always the Downloads folder, reachable through any file manager or your browser's download list.

iPhone and iPad - Safari saves to the Files app under Downloads, not into Photos. Video files can be moved into Photos manually if you want them in your camera roll. This is standard iOS behaviour and not something a converter can change.

Windows, macOS and Linux - your browser's Downloads folder, and the download bar links straight to it.

Downloaded files stay on your device permanently. The tool runs in any modern browser - Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Opera - and the resulting MP4 plays on Android phones, iPhone, iPad, computers and most smart TVs.

One limitation worth knowing: videos longer than about two hours are not supported. The cap exists so that no single conversion takes more than a couple of minutes.

If Something Does Not Work

Conversions fail in a small number of predictable ways.

"That does not look like a YouTube link" - the pasted text is not a complete video address. Copy the full URL from your browser's address bar, or use the Share button in the YouTube app and choose Copy link.

Nothing happens when you click Convert - usually a script blocker or privacy extension. Allow scripts for this page, or try a different browser.

The download stops partway - typically an interrupted connection, common on mobile data. Delete the partial file before retrying, because some browsers resume into the same broken file and produce the same result again.

The file will not play - check the size first against the guide above; anything far smaller than expected did not finish, even if it looks complete in a folder listing. If the size looks right but your player refuses it, the cause is usually the codec inside the container. MP4 files normally hold H.264 video, which every device made in the last decade handles, but occasionally you will meet H.265 (HEVC), which is not supported everywhere. VLC plays essentially every format on every platform and is the fastest way to tell whether the problem is the file or the player.

It is taking a long time - source length is the biggest factor, followed by server load, which peaks during US and European evenings. Converting to audio is considerably faster than pulling full-resolution video.

MPG and MP4 Compared

Both are video containers. The practical difference comes down to age and compatibility, and MP4 is the safe default for almost every use.

Audio coding formatsMP2, MP3MP3, AAC, AC-3, others

MPG uses older MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 coding, which produces noticeably larger files for the same picture quality. Unless you have a specific reason to want MPG - usually an older device or legacy software - choose MP4.

Is Y2MP4 Safe?

A converter should be judged on what it asks of you. This page asks for a video link and nothing else - no email, no account, no browser extension, and no program to install.

The genuine risks with converter sites follow a recognisable pattern:
- A notification permission prompt on arrival. No converter has a legitimate reason to send push notifications.
- Several download buttons where only one is real. If you cannot tell which is which, none deserve a click.
- "Install our app or extension for faster downloads." Extensions can read everything you do in your browser.
- An .exe or .apk file when you asked for .mp4. Always check the extension before opening anything.
- A "codec required" or "player update" prompt. Modern browsers play MP4 natively.

Legal Use

Download content you own, have explicit permission to use, or that is published under a licence permitting download. Public-domain material and Creative Commons content are fine - YouTube marks Creative Commons licensing in the video description.

Downloading copyrighted video without permission is a violation in most countries regardless of which tool is used. The legitimate uses are common: your own uploads, lectures released for offline study, and royalty-free media for projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Y2MP4?
Y2MP4 is a free online converter that turns permitted YouTube links into MP4 video files. It runs in your browser, with nothing to install and no account to create.

Does Y2MP4 work with youtu.be and Shorts links?
Yes. Standard watch links, youtu.be short links and /shorts/ URLs are all accepted, including links copied from the YouTube app's Share button.

Which resolution should I choose?
720p is the best all-round compromise. Choose 1080p for a laptop or TV, and 360p or lower when storage or mobile data is limited.

Why does 1080p sometimes look no better than 720p?
Because a converter cannot add detail that was not in the source. If the original was uploaded at 720p, choosing 1080p gives you a larger file with the same picture.

Can Y2MP4 extract just the audio?
Yes. Choose an MP3 option on the download page and you get the audio without the video track, at roughly a tenth of the file size.

Is there a length limit?
Yes, around two hours. The cap keeps any single conversion down to a couple of minutes rather than leaving you waiting.

Does Y2MP4 work on mobile?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser with no app to install.

Is it legal to use Y2MP4?
Only download content you own, have permission to use, or that is freely available for download.

If You Need Something This Page Cannot Do

This is a single-video browser tool. For jobs outside that scope, a desktop program is the better answer:

- Converting files already on your computer, batch jobs, or trimming and editing - HandBrake is free, open source, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Converting video files already on your device to MP3 - try Video2MP3 Converter, which works from your own files rather than from a link.
