is a set of programs that let Web application programmers easily create and view diagnostic information by plugging a COM trace DLL into any program that supports COM components.
It is particularly well suited to capturing trace data while a program or Web page is executing. The trace entries are created from statements inserted into the application program. As the trace entries are retained across multiple program executions and tracing has a low overhead, WBTrace can also be used in production environments to provide diagnostic information at customer sites. The time of each trace entry is recorded to the nearest millisecond, thus providing an easy way to capture performance-related information.
The two main components of WBTrace are the Tracer DLL and the TraceViewer program. The Tracer DLL is a small (22K) ActiveX component written using Microsoft's ATL. When the component is registered in the Windows System Registry, traces can be generated in all programs that support ActiveX components. Trace entries are written to a memory-mapped file, thus making capturing of information fast and efficient. It also makes the trace accessible to the TraceViewer without stopping the program creating the entries. The TraceViewer is a Visual Basic program that displays trace entries as a scrollable grid. The entries are obtained from a trace file or an active trace in memory.
