The UpgMaker is used to identify new, changed, or deleted files between the old and new versions of a file set. This information is used by the program to generate an upgrade file. The generated upgrade file contains only the changes to the file set. It is often considerably smaller than the sum of the file sizes in the collection.
The Updater/Applicator is used to apply the changes contained in an upgrade file. The upgrade is applied to a copy of the old file set, updating the files to their newer version. This process is sometimes referred to as patching, when it is used with computer programs. However, it can also be used with other data types, such as databases and word processing files.
