If you use a web browser to search. It displays search results like when you use google but this time it will pull files from your hard drive. Then you can see at the bottom of the search engine how many files it pulled up. In addition you can search with a pop-up window which appears when you double-tap the command key. You can then type in the first few letters of the file application or the element you want to find and google desktop will start listing everything that starts with those letters. Google desktop is a useful way to make a copy of older versions of a file too. Then google desktop takes a snapshot and saves it to a cache on your hard drive every time you view a file.
