it works like this: whenever a comment, trackback, or pingback is posted on your site, it's sent to the akismet website, which tests it and sends back either a favorable or unfavorable result. Akismet doesn't need to keep a black list of spammers anymore. This site takes care of everything. For a false positive you can always contact akismet to get another result. The api key is available on the user registration page of wordpress. You can access it by clicking here.
