Cars, tracks, scenes and such can be created with relative simplicity in mind (compared to other driving simulations). The 3D and other file formats are, or should be, documented.
Editors and support programs are also available to get a very flexible and expandable simulator. It uses OpenGL rendering.

Under the disguise of a motorsport game racer hides a powerful driving simulator that accurately recreates the on-road experience. Although not a game it allows you to take part in multi-player races over a local network. A major goal of racer is to involve users in its development and creating circuits or cars is much easier than in other driving simulators. Using racer you can easily integrate models created in maya 3d studio or zmodeler. Another interesting feature in racer is its in-game physics. By analysing logs of applications such as the matlab program it draws from the real life movements of vehicles.
