The invention of the sport called rugby was simple-- it happened during an intra-school soccer game. According to one account, William Webb Ellis was frustrated by his failure in an attempt to kick the ball, so he picked it up and ran with it-- a flagrant violation of the rules. It occurred to the other students that Ellis just might have something, and games of soccer in which running with the ball became frequent, leading the evolution of modern rugby and paving the way for Rugby 2001.

Rugby 2001 features 20 real international teams and over 600 real players with statistics taken from Rugby World Cup '99. Sculpting techniques were used for the creation of realistic likenesses of actual players including build, height, and player numbers. An all-new 3D game engine allows smoother, more realistic player animations and dynamic stadium and player lighting.
