Overview

What is Expn?

Probes email addresses through SMTP commands

In depth

A closer look at Expn

expn connects to the host specified in address, following MX records if any, and uses SMTP dialog EXPN and VRFY commands to inquire where the mailer there would transmit mail sent to the address. Aliases on that host are expanded to show the ``real'' address, and .forward files are examined to show forwarding addresses. The output therefore shows, to the extent possible, where mail will be delivered.".
