WorkSoft WinSubst0.6 Beta

WorkSoft WinSubst is a graphical GUI for the Subst command line available in Windows, which lets you associate paths with drive letters as well as check out the names of current virtual drives. It's easy to set up.Before proceeding any further, you should know that the application hasn't been updated for a very long time, its project seems to be discontinued, and it remained in beta development stage. It still worked on newer Windows editions in our tests, though.

View and add virtual drives using a simple GUI

The tool adopts a clean interface, showing all identified drives at startup, namely the drive label, name, filesystem, and Subst directory.New virtual drives can be added to the list by indicating the Subst directory on the disk, drive letter, and icon. They can be automatically restored after system restart. New drive entries are highlighted in green in the main app window.Furthermore, WorkSoft WinSubst gives you the possibility to delete all or just the selected virtual drives, refresh information displayed, or view drive properties to find out the Subst path, icon, label and drive type. There are no other notable options provided by this program.

Evaluation and conclusion

We haven't come across any unpleasant surprises in our tests as far as stability is concerned, thanks to the fact that the software utility didn't hang, crash or prompt error messages. As we expected, it didn't put a strain on the overall performance of the computer, since it needed a low amount of CPU and RAM to work properly.Too bad that WorkSoft WinSubst isn't in development anymore. Other than that, it offers a simple and speedy solution for substituting drive letters for any paths, viewing the names of virtual drives, and restoring them after computer reboot automatically.
