In depth

A closer look at FoxArc Screen Saver Builder

Screensavers were originally created to protect old CRT displays, by constantly changing colors on the screen while you’re away. Now, these can even be used for presentations, since they can be composed out of various different multimedia items. Creating one can easily be done with specialized applications like FoxArc Screen Saver Builder.

Easily add pictures to your project

After a short and uneventful setup process, you can go ahead and launch the application to see what it’s all about. A compact main window shows up, with all features in plain sight. The overall process of adding pictures, and even building the screensaver itself doesn’t take much time, nor effort, thanks to the general simplicity of design. The application only works with pictures, but you need to rely on the built-in browse dialog to add them, because drag and drop is not supported. These can be either JPG, JPEG, BMP, or PNG files. Once imported, they appear as thumbnails in a horizontal list, with the possibility to scroll through them, and even have them arranged in a custom order.

Leaves more to be desired

Your screensaver also needs a name, which is written down in a dedicated text field. In addition, a slider lets you set the slide interval in seconds, with the default configuration of five seconds. Sadly, there aren’t any transition effects to choose from.Building the screensaver doesn’t take a lot of time, but you might end up scratching your head for a while, since there’s no field to specify save destination. This is because the application automatically stores and adds it as a system screensaver, with the corresponding Windows panel showing up when done. It would have been useful to at least export to a custom location, not to mention building an EXE.

In conclusion

Bottom line is that screensavers are now a bit more than a customization option for your computer. However, FoxArc Screen Saver Builder leaves more to be desired overall, only letting you work with pictures, without even the option to add an audio background. The end result can’t be exported to a custom location, nor any settings for mouse interaction.
