Smart Kit : Simple file manager with dual panes and support for keyboard shortcuts for basic file management operations, featuring a search tool
Smart Kit is a simple-to-use dual-pane file manager that supports basic file operations. It features a file finder and a history pane, among others. The tool can be handled with ease by anyone. Before proceeding any further, you should know that the utility hasn't been updated for a long time and it has compatibility issues with later Windows editions.
Simple setup and dual-pane interface
After a fast setup procedure that shouldn't give you any trouble, you're welcomed by a dual-pane interface that lists the root drive's contents in both parts. You can select one or more files and folders from one part to copy or move them to the other, as well as to delete the items.
Perform basic file management operations
It's possible to create new folders, display a panel which shows directory statistics (e.g. total space occupied, total size and files, actual space used considering cluster size), calculate occupied space, create new files, invert the selection, view history, use a search function, as well as switch between the left and right file list. Moreover, you can view and edit files. Keyboard shortcuts are supported.
Evaluation and conclusion
The tool didn't put a strain on the overall performance of the machine in our tests, thanks to the fact that it needed low CPU and RAM to work properly. On the other hand, it froze and crashed several times out of the blue when we were tinkering with its interface. We must also take into account the fact that Smart Kit hasn't been updated for a long time and it remained in beta development stage, so stability issues are to be expected. To sum it up, you should probably look for a more reliable file manager for your daily work.
