enEditor : Multi-tabbed file viewer and editor for plain text documents and scripts, featuring advanced search, text formatting, and other tools
enEditor is a lightweight application that enables you to open and edit files, namely plain text, ALL, PAS, SQL, XML and Ruby. It features several basic options that can be easily handled, even by users less skilled with such software.
Multi-tabbed GUI for editing text and scripts
By the look of the interface, the utility hasn't received updates for a long time. It consists of a classical window that doesn't put emphasis on graphical elements, yet it has a simple layout that makes it easy to navigate.Multiple tabs are supported, which means that you can open multiple files at the same time and easily cycle through them. It's possible to cut, copy, paste, delete and select all text, as well as undo and redo actions.
Advanced search and other tools
Moreover, you can resort to a search and replace function that features case sensitivity, whole word only, caret search, selected text only, and regular expression modes. The status bar can be hidden from the main window, while the font options can be customized when it comes to the type, style, size, effects, color and script. There are also features available for formatting text, running scripts, and implementing new tools into the program. However, these didn't work in our case.
No installation required
There is no setup pack involved, which makes enEditor portable. It means that you can save the downloaded files to a custom directory on the disk or copy it to a removable storage unit, in order to seamlessly run it on any PC with as little effort as possible. It doesn't change system registry settings but it auto-updates an .xml file to remember your configuration on exit. Administrative privileges may be applied to avoid startup errors.
Evaluation and conclusion
CPU and RAM usage was minimal in our testing, so it didn't hamper the computer's performance. However, enEditor hasn't been updated for a long time and some of its features no longer work properly on newer Windows models.
