Overview

What is Oni?

Oni : Write code within a very modern environment by relying on this Electron-based code editor that takes some of the best features from Vim, Atom, and Visual Studio Code

In depth

A closer look at Oni

Choosing the perfect code editor can become a bit a hassle considering the sheer number of such tools that are currently so easy to get ahold of.Of course, choosing "the best" code editor comes down to your specific needs and preferences, however, there's no denying the fact that some like Atom, Vim, and Visual Studio Code are not popular without good reasons. If you happen to like at least one of the aforementioned code editors, especially Vim, then you might be interested in giving Oni a quick run-through and see what's what. In short, this Neovim-based and Electron-built code editor combines typical features with fast modal editing capabilities.

Boost code editing productivity with the help of this compelling Vim-inspired IDE

Since it's based on neovim, you're provided with some of the best features of VIM (text-editing engine and the canvas-renderer, for example), as well as with a ton of extendability options. For instance, Oni is not only compatible with most VimL plugins, but it's also fully configurable via JavaScript.Of course, just like all modern code editors, Oni features code completion, support for go-to definition, and method signature help thanks to LSP, short for Language Server Protocol. There's also a so-called "Fuzzy Finder" feature which allows you to effortlessly switch between multiple files, a Quick Info functionality (with JavaScript and TypeScript support) and a command palette that offers a CMD-based interface.Other than that, you get a very functional app with a modern and stylish, black-themed GUI that looks right at home on Windows 10. We wish we could we could praise the app's GUI a bit more, however, its response times make the app feel a bit sluggish, especially when compared with other, lighter code editors.

A very exciting cross-platform and open source IDE built on top of Vim

All in all, Oni is a very interesting take on what a modern code editor should be all about. The application boasts some of the best IDE-like features of some of the most relevant code editors out there and enough configuration and extendability possibilities to keep everyone happy.
