Doxygen is a simple-to-use tool built to help you collect documentation for C++, Objective-C, C, Java, Python, ID, PHP, C# and D. It is capable of generating an HTML file as well as a reference manual from a set of source files. It comes in handy for easily identifying data in large source distributions.

No installation necessary

There is no setup pack, which makes Doxygen portable. You can drop the program files in a custom directory on the disk and directly launch the app, as well as move them to a USB flash drive to easily launch Doxygen on any PC. Plus, it does not modify Windows registry settings or create extra files on the disk without your permission, thus leaving it clean after removal.

Console and graphical interface

Advanced users familiarized with console apps may launch Doxygen from a Command Prompt dialog, study the list of triggers and quickly send commands for execution. There is also a graphical interface available that splits the entire task into two steps.

Customize settings one step at a time

Once you specify the working directory to run Doxygen from, you can configure settings using a wizard or enter expert mode to generate documentation.In wizard mode it is possible to fill out information pertaining to each topic. For example, when it comes to general details about the project, you can set the project name, synopsis, version/ID and logo, directory to scan for the source code, recursive mode and destination. Additional options can be selected for the build, messages, source browser, index, HTML, and so on. Log details can be saved to file for closer examination, especially if any errors have occurred.

Evaluation and conclusion

We have not come across any issues in our tests, since Doxygen did not hang, crash or pop up error messages. It takes reasonable time to produce code docs while consuming low CPU and RAM. All in all, the app gets the job done and should meet the requirements of most users.
