ExamDiff : Visually compare two text documents or the binary code of two files to find out if they're identical, and check out the highlighted differences
ExamDiff is a handy software application that you can use to compare the contents between two files to find out if they're identical. It features several options that can be quickly figured out.
Simple setup and interface
Installing this tool is a fast and easy job that shouldn't impose any difficulties. As soon as it's launched, it asks you to locate the two files you want to compare using a file browser. Evidently, both files must have the same extension to be taken into account. If they're not text documents, the program shows their binary code instead.
Compare two files and view differences
All differences can be easily noticed in the main window because they are highlighted. What's more, you can open text files in the default text editor to make adjustments, compare files again or swap them, as well as show only the first or second file instead of both at once. The viewing mode can be switched from vertical side-by-side panes to horizontal ones. Moreover, you can ask ExamDiff to show only the differences, or use a basic search function to track down any keywords.
Configure program settings
It's possible to ignore all whitespace, changes in amount of whitespace, cases, leading and trailing whitespace in lines, treat both files as texts, hide line numbers, modify the tab and margin sizes, customize colors for added, deleted and changed lines when it comes to the background and text, and indicate another external text editor.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't come across any stability issues in our tests, thanks to the fact that the utility didn't hang, crash or display error messages. Its impact on the overall performance of the machine was barely noticeable, since it needed low CPU and RAM to work properly. No recent updates have been made, though. Otherwise, ExamDiff proves to be a reliable application for comparing two files, particularly if they're text documents.
