Overview

What is Sourced?

Sourced : Edit webpage source code from existing local projects, as well as FTP or SFTP servers in an intuitive environment supporting syntax highlighter, and more

In depth

A closer look at Sourced

Websites aren’t all just about the fancy visuals, neat animations, and content they hold. For them to properly provide the info sets you’re looking for, tons of lines of code are written, and assembled into a functional product. As such, applications like Sourced make it easy to edit code, or create new projects from scratch.

Can be used on the go

Before you can enjoy all the application has to offer, you need to make sure that the computer you use it on is fitted with Java Runtime Environment, because it’s a required component for functionality. On the other hand, the application is portable, so you can use it on the go, without posing any threats to the stability of the target PC, since registry entries remain intact. The visual design is simplistic, letting you focus on the code writing itself. However, you can also load a project directory to get started. If so, this can either be done from a local folder, or a SFTP or FTP server by providing the proper credentials, and path.

Good, but far from being a pro

All project elements show up in a side navigation panel, which enlists all items in a tree view. On the bright side, you’re free to work on more projects at a time, because of integrated tab support. Tabs are saved individually, with confirmation prompts, so you don’t lose any data by accident. The text pad is pretty useful when it comes to code writing. Line numbering on the side makes it easy to keep track of the length of projects, with additional info found in the status bar, such as the line you’re currently on, and the corresponding column.Syntax highlighting is among the supported options, but with no customization options in this regard. Regular edit options are at your disposal, such as copy, cut, and paste, undo and redo for mistakes, and even a search tool with a replace component to quickly fix any errors.

In conclusion

Bottom line is that code written in a powerful environment has more chances of success. However, Sourced fails to deliver the depth of a proper IDE, with ambiguous file support, and rather poor selection of features. On the other hand, quick edit operations can easily be performed here, with portability representing a major advantage.
