Java editor is a plain and simple application written in Java that allows you to edit Java code in a user-friendly environment. Before proceeding any further, you should know that the app hasn't been updated for a long time, so it may have compatibility issues on modern machines.

No setup necessary, besides Java

Provided that you have Java installed on your computer, you don't need to set up anything else. Therefore, you can save the program files anywhere on the disk and just click the executable to launch Java editor. You can also copy it to a removable storage unit to directly run it on any PC. It doesn't alter the Windows registry configuration.

Straightforward interface and options

The GUI is user-friendly and contains few elements in the menu bar and toolbar, reminding us of Windows Notepad. You can write or paste Java code in the main app window, compile and run it, as well as view the DOS output on the bottom part of the screen.Furthermore, you can consult an additional pane to find out of any errors existing in the Java code, undo your actions, use a basic search function and start from the cursor or take the entire code into account, run the last search with one click, create an HTML file using the code, or run an applet.The project can be saved to file, so you can later pick up from where you left off. As far as program options are concerned, you can modify the default location for the Java SDK, customize font settings and deactivate smart tabs along with autoindent, and change the default HTML template code.

Evaluation and conclusion

The tool didn't freeze, crash or display error messages in our tests. CPU and RAM consumption was low, so it didn't hamper system performance. Unfortunately, syntax highlighting is unsupported. However, as previously mentioned, we must keep in mind that Java editor hasn't been updated for a long time.
