Every keyboard is fitted with a button which instantly captures a picture of the entire screen and sends it to clipboard. However, choosing just the part of interest out of the image can be a little time-consuming, case in which you might be interested in some third-party alternatives such as Capture Screen Rectangle.

Perks of portability

A cool advantage is that you can use the application from the moment it reaches your computer, because there’s no setup involved. It doesn’t make any changes to system registry entries, so you’re free to use it without having to worry that the health status of the target computer gets affected.The application stays in the tray area at all times, and goes there on launch. A cool trick you might want to perform is to add a shortcut to the system Startup folder so that it’s ready by the time you reach the desktop. On the other hand, you can simply assign a hotkey command to its shortcut from the Properties panel to only launch it when needed.

Good, but far from being a pro

There’s no interface to the application, and you find all tools you need to work with inside the tray icon menu. There are two options to work with, namely to capture screen to clipboard or to file. The clipboard functions like the keyboard button, while saving to file is possible under formats like BMP, PNG, and JPG.Unfortunately, there’s no possibility to trigger the capture function through hotkeys, and the keyboard button doesn’t trigger the capture session. Capturing is only possible by dragging a rectangle over the area of interest.

A few last words

Taking everything into consideration, we can state that Capture Screen Rectangle is a nifty little tool which is rather similar to the default function, but allows you to define the capture area. However, it could have used at least an option to assign a trigger hotkey, not to mention an auto save option.
