In depth

A closer look at ColorSpy

ColorSpy is a lightweight piece of software you can use to obtain the HTML and RGB codes of any color from the screen using a dropper. It also has three built-in, distinct color palettes for quickly selecting one of the containing colors. This kind of software comes in handy for web designers, artists and graphic editors, among other types of PC users.

Setup, prerequisites, and interface

The downloaded installation file gets unwrapped easily and quickly, as there are no special options available in the setup wizard. On the other hand, you should make sure to have .NET Framework installed, since the tool cannot work without this software framework. This shouldn't be an issues for modern Windows users, though, as the OS has it by default. The interface of ColorSpy is clean and intuitive. All available options are revealed in a single window, so you don't have to depend on multiple panels to carry out tasks. To select a color, you can click the blue square displayed on the upper-left corner of the screen and drag it over any part of the visible desktop to capture the color under the cursor.

Capture desktop colors to copy HTML and RGB codes

The HTML and RGB color codes are calculated in real time, and any of them can be copied to the Clipboard with one click. The alternative is to select text from the dedicated box and hit the Ctrl+C key combination or pick the copy option from the right-click menu. The three color palettes can be selected from a drop-down menu ("Color Wheel 1", "Color Wheel 2", "Pantones").

Elementary color picker with basic options

The software application didn't hog resources in our tests, consuming a low amount of CPU and RAM. It stayed stable and didn't hang, crash or indicate errors. All in all, you can quickly select desktop colors to learn and copy RGB and HTML codes with the aid of ColorSpy, although it's not sophisticated.
