Overview

What is My Flash Drive LED?

My Flash Drive LED : Keep an eye on read and write operations that removable storage devices perform while connected to your PC with customizable indicators in your system tray

In depth

A closer look at My Flash Drive LED

Storage devices have greatly evolved throughout the years, from large sized devices with little space, to the exact opposite. Nowadays, Flash drives can store huge amounts of data and some of them are even equipped with LED lights to indicate read / write operations. In this regard, My Flash Drive LED comes as a means of keeping an eye on removable storage device activity in the same manner, but bringing indicators to your desktop.

Lightweight with no installation required

Not necessarily to be called a feature, the application has the advantage of being portable, which means you don't have to deploy it on your system so it does not mess up registries. However, there's a catch, because the application is not capable of monitoring a single device if more are connected, so you can't keep a copy on each Flash drive you own.

Automatically detects devices you connect

There's no interface to work with, the application automatically hiding in the system tray. Whenever you plug in a removable storage device, the application detects it and puts it on the list of monitored items. These can be viewed at any time by accessing the corresponding system tray menu, with details regarding volume letter, name and total size.

Good but far from being a pro

Configuration options are pretty shallow, with no option to target a specific device for monitoring. This can be a pain if used for more, because the indicator is the same, with only one tray icon and it's difficult to determine whether or not a device is performing a read / write operation and which one.On the other hand, if used on a single device, the task is flawlessly accomplished. There are seven light flash speed rates, ranging from really slow to really fast, with info on exact time intervals between blinks. What's more, you can pick a different color for both operations, but the amount of choices is limited to six options.

In conclusion

On an ending note, My Flash Drive LED does not bring anything new to the market and even though the concept is neat, the overall implementation of features leaves a little something to be desired. Portability is an advantage, but the lack of options to target a single device tips the scale against its favor. However, it can come in handy if you only want to keep an eye on one Flash drive that's constantly receiving and sending data to your computer.
