Duplicate files might end up taking a significant amount of storage space you would otherwise use to store other data. That is why a periodical duplicate cleaning session is recommended. To do so, a dedicated application is required, as carrying out the task manually is tedious. Created in Java, Uniqueoid provides a cross-platform software utility that can serve to this purpose.

Compares files by hash code to find duplicates

Uniqueoid requires no installation, but the Java JRE package must already be installed on your computer as a mandatory prerequisite. The application can process a combination of folders and individual files, as added by you when starting a new search.Uniqueoid parses the chosen folders recursively, meaning it also takes a look into sub-folders, at each and every file. In other words, it compares a file with all the others, trying to detect all the duplicate data. The comparison is based on the hash codes of all the files, with MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256 being supported.

Preview duplicates and remove unneeded files

Once the scan is completed, Uniqueoid displays a list of all the groups of duplicate files in the Results section, along with their hash codes. As expected, it also features a preview area for graphic files so images can be compared side-to-side. On the other hand, no preview options are available for other types of files. For instance, it would come in handy to have a built-in audio player to load a small section of duplicate songs or an integrated mini-browser for HTML files.You can use Uniqueoid to eliminate copies of files you don't need, either by selecting them manually or by using a template to mark your choices. Files are immediately removed from your computer, so Uniqueoid manages to free up storage space.
