Olden is a Paint.net plugin that provides you with a few customization options for applying effects to photographs, making them look vintage. It can be handled with ease not only by those familiarized with this advanced photo editing tool, but also first-time users.

Install and access the Paint.net add-on

The entire extension is wrapped in two DLL files that can be downloaded and copied to the "Effects" folder of Paint.net's location. This works whether you have an installed or portable edition on the computer.Restarting the application is necessary if it was already launched before performing the file operation. Once you've opened an image, you can access Olden from the "Photo" submenu of the "Effects" menu. It's marked with a small icon that looks like a puzzle piece, which can be found next to all external add-ons.

Set the border, color and intensity

The old photo effect is immediately activated after running the plugin, waiting for further instructions. While keeping an eye on the picture to view modifications, you can adjust the border, color and intensity of the filter.This can be done by moving sliders, specifying their numerical values, or by clicking on two buttons to increase and decrease the number. Any setting can be restored to default with the click of a button. There are no other notable options available.

Evaluation and conclusion

The extension hasn't been updated for a pretty long time, but we haven't come across any compatibility issues in our tests. It successfully integrated with the most recent version of Paint.net, which remained stable throughout our evaluation, without freezing, crashing or prompting errors.It took a while to render images when configuring settings during the preview, though. Otherwise, Olden delivered satisfying results for Paint.net vintage filter.
