Overview

What is DriveUse?

DriveUse : Automatically calculate the size of folders and subfolders in all local, removable and network drives using this simple and portable tool

In depth

A closer look at DriveUse

DriveUse is a simple-to-use application that automatically calculates disk space and displays the largest folders from your drives. It identifies not only local drives, but also removable and network partitions.

No installation required

The whole program's wrapped in a single .exe file that you can save to a preferred directory on the disk or copy to a USB flash drive, in order to seamlessly run it on any PC with minimum effort and no previous installers. It doesn't integrate new entries into your system registry, need DLLs to run, or create files on the HDD without asking for permission.

Simple interface and options

The GUI is user-friendly, represented by a normal window with a neatly organized structure. It doesn't put emphasis on graphical elements, yet it's easy to figure it out, since there are only a handful of options available.

View calculated folder sizes

It automatically detects your disk drives at startup and calculates folder sizes. This task may take a long time, depending on the size of your disks, during which DriveUse appears to be frozen. On scan completion, it organizes the directories in a hierarchical tree, where you can view the size of folders and expand them to discover the size of their subfolders. It's also possible to refresh this information by recalculating the folder sizes. Unfortunately, the tool doesn't implement options for copying data to the Clipboard, exporting it to file, or printing it.

Evaluation and conclusion

Although it hasn't been updated for a long time, it worked smoothly on newer Windows versions in our evaluation, without triggering the OS to hang, crash or indicate errors. CPU and RAM consumption was minimal during scans. All in all, DriveUse takes a speedy approach toward calculating folder sizes to reveal the largest items and it doesn't require installation, but it has a light set of features.
