The AutoMute application was designed to be a small utility that can be used to mute the sound on your computer for a set amount of time. This can be useful if your computer is on all the time and you don't want to hear it going 'bing-bong' in the middle of the night to announce that you have mail. I recommend putting a shortcut to it in your startup folder - this way it will run all of the time. This program is freeware - if you like it, be nice to another human being.
