In depth
A closer look at rmtSHUTDOWN
rmtSHUTDOWN is a tool that gives us the ability to shutdown, and optionally reboot, local and remote systems over the network.Send Wake-on-LAN packets to WOL enabled adapters across the network. Bring systems to life to perform system management routines, gather inventory information and other related tasks.Flexible command line options allow batch processing and easy scheduling. Here are some key features of "rmtSHUTDOWN":? Kill Applications Without Saving Data: All applications on the remote server will be forced to close, data in memory will not be saved.? Reboot After Shutdown: The remote system will reboot. If this option is not selected, the system will be shutdown and in a state to be safely powered off.? Message Text: A message that will be displayed on the remote system prior to shutdown.? Delay (seconds): The number of seconds to wait before beginning the shutdown process on the remote system.? Retrieve MAC address prior to shutdown: Stores the MAC address of the remote system which is required to send a Wake-on-LAN packet at a later time? Probes targeted system and retrieves its' MAC address. Each MAC address is stored in the registry. The MAC address must be retrieved prior to sending WOL packets. Each time a system is probed for the MAC address, its' information in the registry is overwritten.Requirements:? You must have an ATX 2.01 (or above)-compliant power supply, and an ATX motherboard with a WOL connector.? You must have a WOL-compliant network card with a WOL connector. An example is the 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 3C905B-TX, but not the 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI 3C905B-TX-NM (non-managed).? Compare the WOL pin descriptions for your network card and for your motherboard. They must be identical; otherwise, your motherboard or power supply may be damaged.? Your BIOS must support WOL, and the WOL option in your BIOS setup must be enabled. If you don't see a WOL option, check the manufacturer of your motherboard for an updated BIOS.? Your network card drivers must also support WOL; check with your network card manufacturer for the latest drivers.Limitations:? 30 days trial.
