ArcSet : Seamlessly remove the read-only attribute from multiple files at the same time, specify a directory, and filter files by extension
Arcset is a simple application that enables you to remove the read-only attribute from multiple files at the same time, in order to enable writing permissions. It leaves the hidden, system and other labels untouched. The utility doesn't include complicated options or configuration parameters, making it accessible for all types of users, even those less experienced with file management software.
Compatibility issues with modern Windows
The setup procedure doesn't take long. However, we couldn't get Arcset to successfully unzip on Windows versions newer than XP. This was resolved by running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3.
Simple interface and options
When it comes to the GUI, the tool has a small window that shows all options put at your disposal, thus giving you an overview before diving into the task. It can process all files from a specified folder to eliminate the read-only label (including subdirectories).Otherwise, you can filter files by selecting one of the supported extensions from the drop-down menu: .mp3, .mp3, .m3u, .m3a, .mpg, .mpx, .mpa, and so on.The task shouldn't take long, depending on the number of identified files. Once it's over, the utility reveals the total and processed files. There are no other notable options available here.
Evaluation and conclusion
The program carried out tasks swiftly in our tests while remaining light on system resources consumption, since it needed a low amount of CPU and RAM to work properly. It features intuitive options and extensive filetype support to help you remove the read-only attribute from multiple files in bulk.On the other hand, it displayed an error and crashed while processing a large number of files. Nevertheless, Arcset hasn't been updated for a very long time and these problems are bound to occur. You can test it for yourself, since it's freeware.
