Overview

What is File-Endings?

File-Endings : Identify all files according to extensions, with a fast, efficient search in a specified folder and all its subdirectories, with options to delete selected files

In depth

A closer look at File-Endings

You surely noticed by now that every file ends with a custom string of characters, unless Windows hides them for you to protect them. This dictates the file’s core function, such as EXE to launch apps, or JPG for common pictures. It can be a bit of a hassle to find all files of a specific extension, but with the help of File-Endings, it all comes down to a few mouse clicks, and several seconds.

Perks of portability

The application comes in a lightweight package that skips you both the time and effort needed to go through the setup process, meaning it can even run on other computers, directly from a thumb drive. However, it completely relies on .NET Framework for functionality, so you need to make sure it is found on the target PC.You might end up slightly confused the first time you run the application, especially since all functions are grayed out initially. This isn’t an issue, but rather a step by step approach on the situation, gradually taking you through the whole operations.

Good, but far from being a pro

As such, the first thing that can even be performed is to specify the location where the application to look for custom extensions. Drag and drop isn’t supported, but using the browse dialog to point at a folder isn't that much of a hassle. As soon as this is done, the application scans the entire directory, as well as all subfolders inside. It only takes a little while for the application to detect all extensions of all types in the specified folder structure, along with the number. Sadly, there’s no search field to manually write down an extension of interest, so you need to manually look through the list.Identifying, and selecting an extension fills up a large panel with all files with that specific extensions, by their path, to make them easy to identify. However, you can’t open the path directly, and the only possible operation is to delete a file, which can be a bit of a pain, considering multiple selection is not an option.

On an ending note

All things considered, we come to the conclusion that File-Endings comes with good intentions, but feels a little rough around the edges overall. The forced approach on steps you need to take can quickly become disturbing, while the lack of an option to jump to specific paths, or at least copy it to clipboard, has the most impact on practicality.
