What is RenameX?

In depth

A closer look at RenameX

RenameX enables you to rename multiple files and folders in batch mode after defining name rules. It features several advanced options for experienced users. It's packed in a simple GUI divided into three panes, where you can add files and folders to the task list via drag-and-drop support, regardless of the file extensions.

Rename files and folders in bulk

As far as renaming options are concerned, you can specify a new base name or add a suffix or prefix. The program applies auto-incrementation, lets you reverse the base name with the number, and gives you a preview during these adjustments.Worth noting is that operations can be carried out for all items in the list or just selected ones. Plus, you can view the number of files and suffices. All files can be renamed together or filtered by extensions, while directories can be renamed by date, size or name, either in ascending or descending order. Another method involves replacing specific parts of the file name with something else. Regular expressions are supported.

Evaluation results and observations

As we expected, the application didn't put a strain on the overall performance of the machine in our tests, thanks to the fact that it required a low quantity of CPU and memory to work properly. It carried out tasks quickly. On the other hand, an error popped up in several cases right after finishing renaming jobs; after this event, RenameX automatically crashed. On top of that, it's not very intuitive for casual users. We must also take into account that it hasn't been updated for a long time.

Finally

To wrap it up, RenameX comes with a rather comprehensive set of settings for a free renaming utility, yet it proved be unstable and less than user-friendly in our tests.
