Overview

What is FileOrganizer?

FileOrganizer : Analyze the content of a folder, or switch to a comparison mode to view differences between two directories, and save results to list

In depth

A closer look at FileOrganizer

Depending on the type of files you’re working with, be them pictures, clips, music, or text documents, you might need to quickly have access to them. A simple solution is to keep an organized database of elements, task which can easily be accomplished with the help of applications like FileOrganizer.

Requires no installation to run

You’re free to take the application with you on a USB flash drive to use on the computer you need to, especially since it can run without an installation. Registries remain intact, and so does the target PC’s health status. However, Java Runtime Environment is a mandatory requirement for functionality, so you need to check whether or not it’s installed on the target PC.The application enlists all files inside the folder you provide, but without including subdirectories, or an option to do so. Loading one needs to be done through the browse dialog, because there’s no support for drag and drop, or a context menu option for quick analysis.

Enlist files, and compare folders

It takes a couple of seconds for the application to read the target folder, creating a table with all files. Name and location are the only details displayed, accompanied by a different column with a check box for batch selection. Depending on the level of details of interest, you can choose to show only file names.Apart from the single folder view, there’s also a comparison mode, which splits the main window into two panels. The second one acts in the same manner, and it’s best to load a different folder to take full advantage of the second pane. Enabling the comparison mode hides all files found in both folders, only showing unique ones. You don’t necessarily have to load folders from your computer. As an alternative, the application can load external lists, which you can also create. Be sure to write down the desired output extension yourself, or you end up with a plain file when exporting.

To sum it up

Bottom line is that manually sorting out files in different folders can be a pain through conventional methods, and FileOrganizer wants to help you analyze, and compare two folders. Unfortunately, the visual design is rather rough, and the comparison option could have used a color highlighter instead of hiding files.
