Overview

What is MakeRoom?

MakeRoom : View the folders taking up a lot of disk space, filter according to content, and have the source directory brought up for inspection or cleaning

In depth

A closer look at MakeRoom

Files and folders can end up eating a lot of disk space on the long run if you aren’t careful with the way you manage installations, files, and folders. Sure enough, you can take a look over what takes up the most space, to remove or store on different drives, and with the help of tools like MakeRoom, it even becomes fun.

Visually appealing and easy to use

Just as the name might have you believe, the application’s core function is to make it easier to identify the folders on your computer that use the most disk space, and what type of content they store. It does this in a cool environment, and is sure to convince you to run it a few times. What’s more, it can be used on other computers as well, because it requires no installation.Running it brings up the main window, with animated pie charts filling up as drives are scanned, while icons of installed programs, and different types of content fly all over the screen, creating a neat effect. Every partition is scanned, but this only takes a little while, letting you take a better look at folders in a separate section.

Analyze large folders and filter content

Once detection is complete, folders are enlisted in a descending order according to disk space taken. If multiple volumes are on your computer, the list is mixed, but there’s a side panel containing different filters for file types, as well as volumes, to narrow down results.Items are shown by their path, with accompanying icons for types of content, which can be movies, music, pictures, compressed stuff, stuff to mount, stuff that runs, and other stuff, so you basically get to view all kinds of stuff.Response time is impressive, even if the application is bundled with animations and cool transitions for every action you perform. However, it only serves for info purposes, but selecting an item from the list automatically brings up the specific folder in the default explorer. Unfortunately, you can only scan fixed drives, even if you run the application from a USB flash drive.

To sum it up

Bottom line is that looking out after files and folders can prevent your system from getting clogged with items you might not even use. MakeRoom provides a cool environment in which space analysis becomes fun, but intuitive at the same time. Although it can’t scan removable storage devices, it’s a neat way to organize your files and folders.
