When spending many hours in front of the computer at night, it's important to protect your eyes by dimming the lights. Fortunately, newer Windows comes with a built-in option for applying a night filter. Older Windows is not so lucky, though, and this is where Friendeye comes in.

Apply a filter to the entire screen to protect your eyes at night

Designed as a free, open-source and portable application, Friendeye can help keep your eyes safe during night time using a filter. Since there is no installation involved, you can keep the tool stored in your collection of portable software and fire it up as soon as the sun sets. It can also be moved to a USB flash drive or another removable device to be able to run it on any PC without setup.Double-clicking the downloaded .exe launches the application right away. Although no window is brought up to the screen when this happens, you can look for Friendeye's icon in the systray and right-click it to access the settings panel.

Select the tint color and adjust the brightness

As far as options are concerned, you can choose from a black, sepia or green tint for the filter, which covers the entire screen. It's also possible to adjust the level of brightness by moving a slider or by specifying a value. The program can only be exited from the settings window (upper-right corner).Unfortunately, Friendeye is an abandoned software project, which means that it will not receive any further updates. Although it runs on Windows 10, it doesn't work. Nevertheless, you can still download the last released version and use it on computers running older Windows. The software application offers a simple and straightforward solution for protecting the eyesight when working on the PC at night time.
