File Counter is an easy-to-use and portable application that can automatically count all files you specify, whether they are in the same or different folders. It has only a couple of options that can be easily figured out by users, even those inexperienced with file management software.

No setup required, besides .NET Framework

As long as you have .NET Framework installed, you don't need to set up anything else. You can save the downloaded files in any location on the disk or copy them to a USB flash drive, in order to seamlessly launch the tool on any computer. Worth noting is that it doesn't make any changes in the registry or create additional files on the HDD without your permission.

Count files from different folders

As far as the interface is concerned, File Counter adopts a standard .NET Framework form, so it doesn't put emphasis on the visual aspect. All you have to do is drop multiple selected files in the designated area, as the utility calculates them and shows the total number of items automatically.By default, this value is reset when adding a batch of new files. However, this can be resolved by enabling the "Accumulate" option, which comes in handy when you want to count multiple selected files from different directories, whether they're in local, removable, optical or network locations. This accumulative counter can be reset with one click. There are no other notable options provided by this app.

Evaluation and conclusion

Unsurprisingly, File Counter didn't put a strain on the computer's performance in our tests, thanks to the fact that it needed a low amount of CPU and RAM. It instantly counted files, without triggering the OS to hang, crash or prompt error messages. On the other hand, it hasn't been updated for a long time and remained in alpha development.
