Overview

What is Directory Size Explorer?

Directory Size Explorer : View fixed or removable drive content in an organized list to analyze file and folder size, with options to open or remove them at the press of a button

In depth

A closer look at Directory Size Explorer

Video games and specialized editing applications tend to eat up more and more disk space, even though storage devices become larger, and we’re going back to quickly filling up disk space. However, you can use programs like Directory Size Explorer to analyze folder structure to see what’s clocking your disk.

Perks of portability

A neat thing that the application can easily be used to analyze directories from any computer you use it on, and don’t even have to install it for this to be done. In addition, system registries remain intact, making sure the target PC is not affected. However, you do need to make sure that Java Runtime Environment is installed to ensure functionality. After a short while using it, you realize the application isn’t quite fitted with the design you’d expect. In other words, the navigation panel you’re waiting to see comes up as the last step of the process, and it can take a bit of time until you get there. First up, you need to select either a fixed or removable drive, and then wait for it to be scanned.

Takes a lot of time to analyze drives

It’s best not to use it on a large drive, or you can spend countless minutes until the scan process is complete. It would have been useful to see a real time display of results, because there isn’t even a progress indicator to at least give you an idea of how much you need to wait. When done, the explorer menu you’ve been waiting for finally shows up, and displays all files and folders in a list along with name, and size. There’s no possibility to apply any filters, but the list is already organized according to size. Additional options are only a couple, and let you either open a directory, or remove selected files and folders.

In conclusion

All things considered, we can say that Directory Size Explorer leaves more to be desired, although it comes with the intention of showing folder size in an organized manner, feature which Windows doesn’t come equipped with. The set of features is pretty poor, and this would not have been a problem if analysis type had done its job a bit faster.
