Restore hosts file is a lightweight tool designed to revert the Hosts file to its default configuration. This file is a plain text document with TCP/IP details used by Windows to set up links between host names and IP addresses. It can be edited by the administrator.

No installation necessary, besides .NET Framework

Because it was developed with .NET Framework 2.0, the tool needs you to install this platform to be able to run. However, you don't have to set up anything else. Restore hosts file is packed in just one file which can be copied in any location on the HDD or on a removable storage device, in order to launch it on any computer with minimum effort. Just keep in mind that you must have administrative privileges.

Clear-cut GUI for restoring Hosts

When it comes to the interface, the utility opts for a small window with two buttons and details about requirements. You can click a button to open the Hosts file to view the current configuration settings, and click another button to quickly restore it to its default structure.Before doing so, it's recommended to create a backup of the current Hosts file and keep it stored somewhere safe, in case Windows stability issues occur, which can be resolved by replacing the new Hosts with the backup. Unfortunately, this program doesn't integrate options in this regard, for backing up and restoring the old Hosts file.

Evaluation and conclusion

On the other hand, it worked smoothly in our tests, without hanging, crashing or showing errors. As expected, CPU and RAM consumption was minimal.Although it doesn't come bundled with richer options and configuration settings, Restore hosts file offers a simple means of getting ahold of the original Hosts file, and it can be easily handled by anyone.
