IBXM : Preview Commodore Amiga and Scream Tracker MOD, S3M, and XM audio modules in a simple environment fitted with interpolation options and possibility to convert to WAV
Old entertainment systems and computers like the Commodore Amiga were fully equipped with the latest possibilities back then, and this included both audio and video layers. Although not as fancy as today’s music, computers relied on special types of files and formats, and you can easily read and convert them with IBXM.
Interface and perks of portability
Note that in order to properly run the application you need to make sure that Java Runtime Environment is installed on your computer. On the other hand, the programs itself doesn’t take you through a setup process, and can be thus used on other computers directly from a thumb drive without having to worry that stability is affected because registry entries are not modified in the process. The visual design is pretty minimalistic and doesn’t pose any accommodation problems. There’s a slim toolbar which holds the progress slider equipped with an elapsed time display, as well as the play/pause trigger button. The rest of the space is where module instruments or file information is displayed.
Playback options and conversion
Since it’s dedicated to playback of Commodore Amiga audio modules, you can only load files under formats like S3M and XM, also commonly used with ProTracker, Scream Tracker, and FastTracker. However, you can only load one file at a time, and there’s no playlist to at least have multiple items at hand.Playback starts at the press of a button, with additional options to set interpolation to linear, sinc, or none. You can’t enhance or modify any audio channels. On the other hand, the application makes it possible to convert to WAV file, which can easily be used in other editors and projects.
On an ending note
To sum it up, IBXM is a practical little player for Scream Tracker and Commodore Amiga audio modules which can be used on other computers as long as there’s Java installed. The set of controls is intuitive, and there’s also the option to convert to a more malleable format.
