In depth

A closer look at Extension Changer

Extension Changer is a lightweight program designed to modify file extensions in a couple of simple steps, without having to resort to Windows Explorer. It doesn't have complicated options or customization settings, as it can be handled with ease by all types of users.

No setup required, besides .NET Framework

The application's not packed in a setup kit. You can copy the downloaded files to a custom location on the disk or removable storage device to directly launch it on any computer with little effort. It doesn't add new entries to the system registry or generate new files on the disk. On the other hand, it needs .NET Framework, since it was developed with the help of this platform. The source files are also included in the pack and can be analyzed by programmers or those just interested in coding.

Straightforward interface and options

When it comes to the interface, Extension Changer opts for an ordinary window with a plain and simple layout, where it's necessary to indicate the file's location, name and extension before indicating the new format (without dots). The modification should be applied with the click of a button.

Needlessly complicates file renaming operations

However, Extension Changer doesn't support batch processing, which means that it's not capable of changing the extensions of numerous files at the same time. On top of that, it seems to complicate an otherwise simple task, seeing as it's just easier to rename file extensions using Windows Explorer, provided that the "Hide extensions for known file types" is disabled in the Folder Options area. It also requires you to remember the disk location of the file in question.Other than that, Extension Changer carried out tasks quickly while remaining light on system resources usage. It hasn't received updates for a long while and stayed in beta development stage. Nevertheless, you can test it for yourself.
