In depth

A closer look at NameIt

Coming up with different ideas for passwords, or names can be a little frustrating if done too often. However, if there’s no time to plan it through, there are tons of specialized applications out there just like NameIt which comes with a couple of built-in generators, and the possibility to create your own for specific purposes.

Preset generators, and possibility to create your own

With the application installed, running it brings you one step closer to your new password, or judging by the preset generators, a name for a song. The compact main window lets you select the generator to use, with music, and password as the two default ones. At the press of a button, a new item is generated and automatically sent to clipboard.Although there are no configuration options for the password, such as length, or type of characters to use, you can configure this by creating your own types of generators. This is done by expanding the main window to show management options, configuring generator rules, and adding the item to the list. There’s no actual limit to the number of generators to create, and these are easily selected from a drop-down menu.

Creation process, and shortcuts

However, it can take a little while to figure out how to set up a new type of generator, even though there are only three fields you need to fill in. On the one hand, there’s the name, with the second field representing fixed characters which always appear, and this field is not mandatory. What is necessary for the generator to work is the random value component. Three types of variables are used here, with “c” standing for lower case characters, “C” for uppercase, and “n” for number. The amount of variables used dictates output length.Last but not least, desktop shortcuts can be created for either of the generators. Running one brings up no prompt, but simply sends a new string to your clipboard based on configured rules. For faster access, you can assign a hotkey to the shortcut from the Properties panel.

A few last words

In conclusion, NameIt can feel a little rough around the edges at first, coming with only a couple of preset generators, and rather difficult or at least ambiguous creation process. However, once you figure it out, multiple custom generators can be created, with corresponding desktop shortcuts so you don’t launch the application every time you need a random code.
