The information superhighway is quickly getting to all parts of the world, and speed is starting to be less of a concern. However, it doesn’t mean you can download files in the nick of time with any connection, and this is where specialized applications like Download Controller come in handy.

Only works on modem connections

The application comes in a pretty light package, and takes only a little while to get installed on the computer you want to use it. There aren’t any dependencies, except for a modem, so in case you’re connected to the web through other means, the application is of little to no use to you. It’s been specially built to handle modem connections, which means it won’t work otherwise.As soon as it’s installed and launched, the application directly goes to the system tray, but you need to bring up the main window, otherwise it won’t start off automatically. The visual design is pretty minimalistic, and manages to hold all functions in an organized manner, letting anyone quickly accommodate.

Set actions and folder to monitor

Among others, Download Controller lets you choose from a list of actions your computer can perform once download is done. As such, you can tell your PC to power off, play a custom WAV sound file, show a message, or hang up the modem connection. In addition, there are options to make the application run on startup, or integrate itself in Internet Explorer to handle downloads from there.The application isn’t meant for conventional download processes, in the sense that it mostly targets those that seem to take forever. When choosing the monitor folder, you’re also asked to specify the exact file, without any option to automatically detect which aren’t completely on your HDD already.

Taking everything into consideration, we can safely state that Download Controller comes with good intentions, but the public it addresses to is getting narrower by the day. Modem connections are becoming pretty scarce, but if you’re still using one, it can greatly help you keep an eye on them, and run a custom task automatically.
