FIR : Multipurpose and portable app that lets you compress files, extract files from archives, convert and encrypt them, extract timestamps, and more
With the help of FIR you can convert files into other formats, extract files from archives, as well as compress and encrypt files. It's a multipurpose application that contains a few standard and advanced options.
No setup required
This is a portable package, so there is no installation involved. You can save the program files in any part of the disk or on a removable storage unit and just click the executable to run FIR on any computer. It doesn't add new entries to the Windows registry.
Outdated interface with standard options
Unfortunately, FIR doesn't put any emphasis on looks. It sticks to a classical interface with a plain appearance that has a neatly organized structure, though, so you can quickly figure out how to get around.
Process files and configure settings
Files can be converted into BMP, GIF, ICO, PCX, AVI, EXE or FIR formats. It's possible to modify the default output directory, extract file descriptions and save them to file or copy them to the Clipboard, enter passwords, create password files, as well as add and view CRC reports. The software application also lets you save the timestamps, log program activity to file for later inspection, make file associations, set the main frame to stay on top of other windows, import and export color palettes, set images as wallpapers, as well as mark favorites for quick access.
Evaluation and conclusion
FIR hasn't been updated for a pretty long time and it's not fully compatible with later Windows editions. It prompted several error dialogs in our tests when we attempted to change the default output directory and in other cases. Plus, it delivered images with poor quality after conversion. Perhaps you should look for another software app instead.
