Following a series of security-related issues reported by outside analysts, Intel conducted a security review of its firmware and found vulnerabilities in some processors, security flaws which are now widely known as Intel-SA-00086. The affected processor versions include Intel Core processor families from the first to the eighth generation, as well as some Xeon CPU families, the E900 series of Apollo Lake, Pentium G series, and G, N and J series of Intel Celeron.To save you the trouble of having to go through the list and look for your processor model, Intel created a fast vulnerability scanner that can run a quick analysis of your system and tell you if your PC is exposed to the risk. It comes under the suggestive name of Intel-SA-00086 Detection Tool.

A GUI-based tool for end-users and a console one for admins

There are two separate editions of the application inside the package. Most end-users will only need the GUI-based one, which runs a quick analysis to assess the risk. In case your PC is found to be vulnerable, that is, the Intel Management Engine firmware version is on the "black list", then you will be recommended to contact the company for support and advice on how to address this issue. Furthermore, a support page provides links to the webpages of the motherboard manufacturers, pages containing details about how you can update the firmware.Alongside recommendations and the risk status, the Intel-SA-00086 Detection Tool also displays information about your computer's hardware and software configuration.The other edition is a console-based one, which addresses server administrators who need to verify a large number of workstations in a network for the Intel-SA-00086 vulnerability.
