PNM Viewer : View and edit Netpbm files using this Java-based software application that lets you easily and quickly export images to GIF format
PNM Viewer is a Java-based tool that you can use to open and view graphic files with the Netpbm format, used and defined by the Netpbm open-source project. These are portable anymap files (PNM format). The application enables you to export images to GIF format.
No setup necessary, besides Java
Provided that you have Java installed on your computer, you don't need to set up anything else. You can save PNM Viewer anywhere on the disk and just double-click its executable to launch the program. It doesn't add new entries to the Windows registry.
View and edit PNM files
As far as the interface is concerned, the tool adopts a large window with a simple appearance and layout, where you can get started by opening a PNM image. It's possible to view and edit the text embedded in the graphic files, set the image magnification level to zoom in, print the picture, or export it to GIF format by specifying an output directory and file name. The modified PNM image can be saved to the original file, or you can make a new copy.
Evaluation and conclusion
As we expected, the software application didn't put a strain on the overall performance of the computer in our tests, thanks to the fact that it needed a low amount of CPU and RAM to work properly. It worked smoothly in our tests, without triggering the operating system to hang, crash or prompt error messages.Although it hasn't been updated for a long while, it works on newer Windows editions. On the other hand, it comes loaded with standard options and doesn't leave too much room for customization. Nevertheless, PNM Viewer provides you with a simple and effective solution to viewing and editing PNM files, as well as saving images as GIFs.
