Manga Reader is a small-sized application that you can use to read Manga and other comic books, as well as to open files with common image formats. It doesn't contain complex options or customization preferences.

No setup required, beside Java

As long as you have Java installed on your PC, you don't need to set up anything else. This means that you can save the executable .jar file to a custom directory on the disk or copy it to a removable storage unit, in order to directly run it on any PC with as little effort as possible.It doesn't modify Windows registry settings or create files on the disk without asking for permission. In order to uninstall it, you simply have to delete this file.

Simple GUI for reading comic books

As far as the interface is concerned, Manga Reader opts for a standard window with a simple design and layout, where you can indicate a directory whose containing files you want to view.It's possible to jump to any file from the specified folder by just entering its number, change the picture size to fit the width or height, view the number of the current file, as well as check out the folder's name in the title bar. Multiple instances are allowed.

Where it falls short

The tool's not explicit concerning the supported file types, but we've noticed that it works with JPEGs. Moreover, it comes packed with just a basic set of options for reading comic books.On top of that, it doesn't implement buttons for zooming in and out, customizing the background color, or for handpicking the files to view from the folder while excluding the rest, to name some examples.

Evaluation and conclusion

It didn't put a strain on the computer's performance in our tests and remained stable throughout its runtime. There's also an edition available for Mac users. Although it doesn't have richer features, Manga Reader offers a simple solution for reading Manga and other types of comics.
