However, many of us don’t really understand how what this pH value is determined and how it relates to our daily lives.pH Scale is a Java-based simulation designed to shed some light on the subject. It can be useful both for teachers and those trying to learn more about chemistry.
Understand how compounds become acidic or basic
Essentially, the pH value of something is determined by the concentration of hydroxyl (OH-) and hydronium (H3O+), which have a negative and positive charge respectively. These compounds are created when hydrogen ions join with other atoms or molecules.If the concentration of hydroxyl and hydronium in a compound is identical, the solution has a pH of 7, making it neutral. A lower pH indicates that is acidic, while a higher pH tells you it is alkaline (basic).
Learn the pH or common liquids
The program provides you with a list of fluids, such as water, blood, milk, drain cleaner, soda or battery acid. When you select one of them, you can see their pH value and the concentration of H3O- and OH-.You can also add water to dilute the compound and bring it closer to a neutral pH value. To see how the concentration of hydroxyl and hydronium changes, it is also possible to modify the pH value directly.
Simple but helpful chemistry simulation
All in all, pH Scale is a relatively simple piece of software, but it can prove invaluable when trying to explain the concept of pH.
