The application is fairly simple and accessible, but it requires you to have at least some basic knowledge of Mendelian genetics, in order to be able to work with it properly.GeneMixer’s user interface poses little difficulty, even for less experienced individuals, as it functions and features a pretty straightforward and self-explanatory. In addition, it features a ‘Help’ component, where you can learn how to best benefit from it.

Enter the parents’ genes and determine the possible combinations

To get started, you can input the parents’ genes manually, using the ‘Edit’ component, or by copying them from a spreadsheet or a text file, then pressing the ‘Paste’ button in the program’s main window.The manual method displays a ‘Parent Genotype Editor’ window, where you can enter the four different pairs of genes, separating them with a space, while alleles will be signaled by means of a slash symbol. Each text box requires at least one space and one slash.You can then press ‘OK’ and if any mistakes are noticed, a popup window will inform you of the error and instruct you on how to fix it. When everything is in order, GeneMixer allows you to hit ‘Cross’, generating the possible combinations in the ‘Pups’ panel and automatically copying them to clipboard, so you can paste them in a file for further work.
