What is LAMINA?

LAMINA : Analyze large collections of leaves in order to find out details about the shape, size and serration pattern, make use of batch processing, and save the results to a file

In depth

A closer look at LAMINA

LAMINA is a Windows application specialized in analyzing images of leaves. It allows you to make use of automatic actions for determining the area and shape of leaves, as well as serration dimensions and ‘missing’ leaf area. The tool has been developed for the analysis of European aspen leaves but it works with smaller serrations too. It handles only pictures of scanned leaves on a white background (black background is not currently supported).

Clean feature lineup

LAMINA reveals a well-organize suite of features where you are allowed to upload individual images (JPG, TIF, BMP or GIF) or the content of an entire folder. Pictures can be added using only the browse button (there’s no support for drag-and-drop).A help manual is included in the package and offers an overview of the program’s features. Before running any analysis sessions, it is recommended to calibrate the scale.

Semi-automated analysis and batch processing

LAMINA comes with support for two different utilities for helping you process leaf images. The first one can be applied to the analysis of a single file or multiple pictures where users are allowed to manually modify the parameters. The batch processing mode can be used for automatically scanning and analyzing multiple photos at the same time without user intervention.Several tweaks can be applied in order to manually set the threshold value for the background and leaf areas, indicate the minimum size of objects detected for analysis and minimum object density, find and measure leaf serrations, as well as specify the default input and output directory. The file with the analysis results is automatically created in the output directory and includes information about the calibration scale, number of cavities (holes) found in the object, circularity, number of identified leaf serrations, and other comprehensive details as well.

Bottom line

All in all, LAMINA can be used for analyzing large collections of leaves in order to find out details about the shape, size and serration pattern, and is suitable especially for professional users.
