In depth
A closer look at McAfee VirusScan
Initially aimed at home and home-office users, McAfee VirusScan was designed for virus detection and removal. It was equipped with technologies to protect computers from various security threats, such as viruses, worms, Trojans, and spyware. Designed to secure photos, documents and financial data, the utility could be set to automatically scan and clean emails, instant messenger attachments, downloads, and other types of files. It featured real-time protection against malware agents that silently ran in the background, detection at multiple entry and exit points (including USB ports), inline cleaning for locations with viruses, worms, Trojans, ActiveX objects and Java applets, along with ScriptStopper, a technology used for preventing zero-day script-based threats, like the "I Love You" virus.
