Overview

What is Shellac?

lets Windows run smoother by enhancing the System Tray, improving the way icons behave, responding to dialog boxes, and much more.

In depth

A closer look at Shellac

Shellac (which is short for Shell Automation and Configuration) handles five aspects of your typical daily work environment: using icons, using the System Tray, responding to windows, deleting files, and backing up files.

With Shellac you can change the appearance of your desktop icons. You can change the label colors (or make them transparent), and use small icons (just as in a list view) to fit more on your desktop. You can load and save positions of icons on your desktop, in whatever groupings you desire. If your screen resizes, you can have an icon position layout automatically load. You can also load and save collections of icons on your desktop, and hide icons.

Shellac lets you add your own icons to the Windows System Tray. From these icons you can select program files, documents, folders, and system commands from a custom pop-up menu.

Shellac has a built-in feature for automatically responding to common dialogs and windows. This is ideal if you find yourself constantly clicking the "OK" button on a specific window, or if you're always selecting File\Open from your favorite application.

If deleting files are a chore, Shellac can simplify things with its "File Shredder" icon, which, unlike the Recycle Bin, has no confirmations or warnings to deal with. Shellac also lets you schedule groups of files and folders for automatic deletion.

Finally, Shellac lets you place a "Safe" icon on your desktop, which makes backup copies of whatever files and folders you drag onto it. You can also specify a separate program of your own to perform the actual backup operation, or perform actions on copied files, such as zipping them up in an archive.
