Which Resolution Should You Pick?

Higher is not automatically better. Resolution interacts with three things people rarely think about at the moment of downloading: the screen it will play on, the storage it has to fit into, and the connection it has to travel over.

As a rough guide for a five-minute video:
- 1080p — around 150 MB. Right for a laptop, a TV, or anything you intend to keep.
- 720p — around 75 MB. The best all-round compromise for most people.
- 360p — around 30 MB. Sensible when storage or mobile data is limited.
- 240p and 144p — very small. Useful on a slow connection where the alternative is nothing at all.

On a phone screen the visible difference between 480p and 1080p is far smaller than the three-fold difference in file size. If you are watching once on a handset, the middle options are usually the better choice.

The ceiling worth knowing about: a downloader cannot create detail that is not in the source. If a video was uploaded at 720p, asking for 1080p produces a larger file containing exactly the same picture. Sites advertising 4K on every video are describing their menu, not the source material.

Video or Audio?

If you only intend to listen — music, a lecture, a podcast, an interview — take the MP3 rather than the video. Stripping the video track cuts the file size by roughly ninety per cent, and audio playback lets your phone screen sleep, which uses noticeably less battery on a long journey.

For bitrate: 320 kbps for music you want to keep, 192 kbps for general listening, and 128 kbps for anything speech-led. A spoken recording sounds essentially identical at 128 as at 320 and takes a third of the space. Going above 320 kbps does not help, because the source audio is already compressed.

Where Your Downloads Go

The most common question after a successful download is simply where the file went. It differs by device.

Android — almost always the Downloads folder, reachable through any file manager or your browser's download list. Media apps usually pick up new files on their own, though some need a manual library refresh first.

iPhone and iPad — Safari saves to the Files app under Downloads, not into Photos or Apple Music. Video files can be moved into Photos manually; audio needs an app that plays local files. This is standard iOS behaviour and not something any downloader can change.

MPG uses older MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 coding, which produces noticeably larger files for the same picture quality. MP4 is the modern container and is read by essentially every phone, tablet, computer, smart TV and editing program made in the last decade. Unless you have a specific reason to want MPG — usually an older device or a piece of legacy software — choose MP4.

If Something Does Not Work

Downloads fail in a small number of predictable ways. These cover nearly all of them.

"That does not look like a YouTube link" — the pasted text is not a complete video address. Copy the full URL from your browser's address bar, or use the Share button in the YouTube app and choose Copy link. Standard links, youtu.be short links and Shorts URLs all work.

Nothing happens when you click Download — usually a script blocker or a privacy extension. Allow scripts for this page, or try a different browser.

The download stops partway — most often an interrupted connection, which is common on mobile data. Delete the partial file before retrying, because some browsers resume into the same broken file and produce the same result again.

The file will not play — check the size first against the guide above. Anything far smaller than expected did not finish, even though it may look complete in a folder listing. If the size looks right but your player refuses it, VLC opens essentially every format on every platform and is the quickest way to tell whether the problem is the file or the player.

It is taking a long time — the length of the source video is the biggest factor, followed by server load. Peak hours are US and European evenings. Converting a long recording to audio is much faster than pulling it as full-resolution video.
