The computer on which the program is installed must have a modem or ISDN connection to the Internet. No additional software is needed on the other computers in the network.

The program includes an integrated HTTP server, which allows the testing of local Web sites, and the establishment of an intranet.

It also includes Gateway functions for FTP clients, Telnet monitors, and a News reader.

In addition, Jana Server is an e-mail server, which allows users on a LAN to send e-mail to each other, and enables each individual user to send e-mail over the Web.
